That was quite a weekend! It was lovely to be invited to join Jordan, family and friends for a weekend in Newquay ahead of the wedding in a few weeks. By the time we were off the train several cans had already been finished off and it was straight into the pub for some beers before heading to our accomodation. As an aside, the rooms which were to be our sanctuary for the next two nights were awful but cheap, taking 6 in one room and 8 in the other. Our room was windowless and got hotter and smellier over the weekend but it did have a shower which functioned pretty well. The place wasn't easy to find as Ricky had forgotten the name of it, or at least the ability to communicate. We walked around but he almost lost the power of speech completely.
Having eventually found it, we were back out with Jordan completing tasks and being dressed in a range of outfits. However, the weekend demonstrated that Newquay is looking to change its image considerably and there were strict policies throughout the town on dress, behaviour and anything that might offend families. That is why Jordan ended up dressed in charity shop clothes, a suit and shirt plus a nice hat. The party moved from place to place until after midnight, not always through choice as both individuals and the group were asked to move on, some fairly regularly.
By Saturday morning I was not feeling at my best, waking at 5am after 4 hours sleep and too much alcohol and then having a vegan breakfast at Wetherspoons. By the time we got to Walkabout I was alive to the possibility I might not make it through the day unscathed and nursed a pint for three hours, making it less than halfway as we watched the football. Rum and coke proved the way ahead and I made it all the way to 9.30 before heading back for an early night, Paul also taking the easier way out.
I could not believe how the others just cracked on and I guess age has a bit to do with it, plus the runners seemed to be more able to keep going. It was a lot of fun and we did go for a swim on Sunday morning with the sun shining. Even so, I was pleased to be back on the train and home.
I might have a bit of a break from alcohol. Certainly been toying with the idea for a while but I also enjoy having a few drinks every now and then. Over the summer I feel I've been drinking more with being away and socialising so much but maybe it isn't quite the essential part of the fun it has been in the past. It's much more likely I'll have a bit of a break for a few days and then cut back when I do have a drink. Moderation perhaps? The trouble is, I know I forget the good intentions when it comes to it. I ought to be more disciplined.
