France part four - Domaine de l'Oiseliere to La Flotte (Ile de Re)

We headed towards La Rochelle using google maps which had served us well throughout but the remote nature of the location we started from, we began to find ourselves on some very small roads which was fun in the motorhome. However, all turned out well and to make time we decided to use the toll roads on this leg of the journey which turned out to mean just a few miles of dual carriageway. Nothing to worry about.

It is worth pointing out that the roads were universally well maintained and we barely saw a piece of litter or a hold up. What a contrast with home.

Once past La Rochelle we were quickly on the road to Ile de Re which means a lovely blast across a massive road bridge. The views were incredible but I was firmly focused on keeping away from the edge. It wasn't ever in doubt of course, just me being paranoid about being up so high.

The first thing we did on arriving at the campsite was head to the supermarket around the corner which was well stocked with fresh fruit and veg. Again, a contrast with home, the produce being fresh, not needing to be chilled and tasting so much better. Joseph loved the fruit in particular but the tomatoes too were much better.

Our pitch was small in comparison with the the one we'd just left and the sense of being surrounded by wonderful nature was lacking but it was perfect for the next week being right next to the pool and other facilities. It suited us down to the ground being quiet despite being busy, and it was great for getting down to the town and beach.

The walk down to the town was great, cobbles and shrubs with so many flowers. It was a pleasure to be there and we had a real sense of having lucked out in choosing La Flotte. The pool was a big hit with everyone and amazingly, it wasn't busy at any time.
