Verwood have been holding second place again in the cricket league but came up against strong opposition in the shape of fourth placed Hythe yesterday. We were two key players short and that made a big difference to the bowling.
Stand in captain, John, won the toss and chose to bat. We batted well for the most part although becalmed in midinnings. Eric and John scored best and we closed on 167 for 8. I managed just the two before being caught out on the midwicket boundary chasing quick runs.
It was never quite enough and we were beaten by two wickets, perhaps a shade closer than it was in reality. They were strolling to victory with 20 needed of the last 8 overs and with 5 wickets in hand. I took 3 quick wickets, including two in consecutive deliveries but before being able to go for the hat trick, they had managed to scrape the winning runs at the other end.
